John and David Norton lived and worked very close together in Pendleton county Kentucky which divided into Grant county in 1820. DNA testing has confirmed that they are not from the same family. Here are links to their respective research.

Below is a great deal of research on their activies in Pendleton and Garnt, KY

John and David Norton not brothers.
It has been accepted that John and David Norton mentioned in the records of Pendleton and Grant counties were brothers or perhaps father and son.  However a letter surfaced written by George H. Norton, the grandson of John Norton of Grant county, that lists the children of John and mentions that he had only one brother Nathaniel.  David Norton is nowhere included in this letter.

David Norton is the son of Christopher Norton Fluvanna county, Virginia who died around 1810.  The arrival and departure of David in Pendleton corresponds with the known activity in Bourbon county.  In 1810 his father dies and he acquires 3000 acres in Pendleton.  In 1814 his brother, John Norton Jr. dies in Bourbon, and David leaves Pendleton Co.  The Barton papers also state that David Norton is buried near Lexington, Fayette Co.

Since the author of the letter was personally acquainted with all of the people he mentions, we are left to give his information great credence.  However, John and David moved and worked together in this area of Kentucky and so it is assumed at this time they were cousins.  The letter mentions that John's father probably came from England and David's father also came from England.

Changes in Campbell, Pendleton and Grant Co., KY
First it needs to be noted that the area that John Norton and David Norton lived in began as Campbell county until Pendleton was formed in 1798.  Pendleton was divided and the Norton land ended up in Grant county in 1820, so we are dealing with records from 3 counties.

1796

John Norton and David Norton first appear in Campbell county in 1796.  David Sr. has a son born in 1796 here and John is on the tax rolls of Campbell county from 1796 to 1797  John paid taxes to Campbell County in 1796 and 1797; Pendleton County from 1799 to 1819; and Grant Co. thereafter as the county boundaries changed.  note 3 Map 2 shows how these counties intersect.

Campbell County, KY formed in 1795

1798

Pendleton County, KY created in 1799

1796 John Norton is 34 years old and has 500 acres.  He has 3 children all too young to help on the farm.  How does he handle 500 acres? 1796, Oct 29 David Norton Jr. born, he lists Pendleton as his birthplace, but it has not been created as yet.   1797 - John has 500 acres and his 4th is child born
1798 John has no land.
1799
John has no land. 5th child born 1803 – John 167 acres, 5 slaves, 2 under 16 years of age.
1800 – John has no land.   John’s wife probably dies, he has 5 children the oldest 9 years and the youngest just born.
1801 - no land    John Norton marries Elizabeth Glaves Sept 1801, about 1 year after her husband Matthew Glaves dies.  John  has 5 children of his own ages 10 – 2 years old. Elizabeth has 3 very young children.  The Glaves family is quite prominent in this area and apparently has some wealth.  There is some controversy regarding the estate of Matthew Glaves.  Elizabeth renounces her part of the Glaves estate and the whole thing is not settled until 1804.  John is paid by the court for taking care of the Glaves children but they choose Elizabeth’s brother as their guardian.  John is granted an interest in the Glaves estate in 1804.
1802 – John 166 acres and 6 slaves. Suddenly John Norton has land and slaves.  This considerable change in his fortune brings a few problems.  On the, 9 Aug 1802: lists court case of George Fendle Whealor vs. John Norton.  This may have been a result of the Glaves estate or the property.  The subsequent court record of, 9 Nov 1802, lists John as delinquent on his taxes, that he is from Campbell Co. and that he paid the taxes there.  It is probable John didn't move but the county line moved.  His land seems to be located south of Falmouth, as the watercourse given is South Licking.
1804 1804     - John 167 acres, 2 slaves on the South Licking,This is the year that the Matthew Glaves estate is finally settled.  John’s acreage will go away and his slaves will be reduced to 2.  These lands and slaves were part of the Glaves estate and in 1804, John lost the control of it.  In 1804 he is appointed on a commission to with Michael Glaves.  Apparently, all is settled between the Glaves and Nortons.
1805 1805     - John no land, 2 slaves, 1 under 16 years.1806     (no listing)
1806 On Oct 1806, Pendleton Co. Order Book B, p. 66: John is listed on the delinquent tax list, and that he has moved to Campbell Co.
1807 1807 (no listing)1808 (no listing) 1809 – John 200 acres, no slavesJohn has sold the slaves to buy land on Eagle Creek.  The next year his land is listed on  Grassy Creek.  I would suppose that this is the land the Norton’s stayed on called Norton’s Branch of the Grassy Creek.   He has moved away for a couple of years and come back with David Norton to buy land away from Falmouth over by Dry Ridge.  John will now figure prominently in the community.  Probably his last child, Elizabeth, has been born so he has 6 children, the 2 oldest boys are certainly old enough to help on the farm at 19 and 17. David Nortons land is south of John's and probably South East of today's Williamstown.
1809 In June of 1809 John is appointed surveyor of Dry Ridge road from Thompson’s old place to Lewis Theobald’s. In August he is appointed hands to work on the road.  (Thomas Bend, William Jump, John Jump, Thomas Wilson, ? Underhilt, Robert Hutchinson, John Franks, Lewis Buskirk, John Doty, Matthew Campbell, Alexander Blackburn, William Johnson) Apparently a surveyor’s job is to maintain and improve the road.  The list of hands is a good representation of John Norton’s neighbors.Another interesting note is the Pendleton Court record of Nov 1809 has a motion from John Norton through his attorney, that a commission be appointed to take depositions as evidence to remove William Mountjoy from his office as Justice of the Peace.  The Mountjoy family is the most prominent family in Pendleton and William is the most important of the Mountjoy’s.  For some reason John has chosen to challenge the Judge. Could this be related to the Glaves settlement? From this point on John Norton will figure prominently in the Court records on commissions and estate sales as an agent of the court.  Mountjoy was not removed, but something seems to have been worked out.
1810 - John 200 acres, no slaves          (David 3,000 acres 3 horses)                 This is a busy year for John and David Norton.  David probably bought land late 1809, but certainly was in Pendleton by February.  How did David acquire 3000 acres?  From the location of the property and David's circumstances it is probable that he bought them with a bond.  This type of transaction was often not recorded.  Since his loss of the land coincides with the death of his brother in Bourbon, it is possible that his brother, with much more property, signed on the bond.February court, William Norton, son of John Norton is appointed a hand on Burton road.  John Norton is appointed along with Lewis Buskirk and Jedidiah Ashcraft, a commissioner to lay out a road from the county line as far as David Norton’s on the east side of the Dry Ridge road.                May court, John Norton along with William Mountjoy, Denis Conyers, and Thomas Hawkins are appointed to lay out a road from William Arnold’s to Bourbon Road near Denis Conyers property.  This road will also run through David Norton’s property.                June 16, 1810 the road from William Arnold’s to Bourbon Road is laid out.  It will go from “Arnold’s lane and taking a ridge to Fork Lick thence crossing and taking a point and following into an old trace and following the same to another creek, thence taking a point and following a marked way to Conyers and through his lane striking the Bourbon trace near Jacob Wingate’s fence going through the lands of Denis Conyers, David Norton and William Arnold.” David Norton signed off on this road which seems to put his land south of Falmouth on the way to Paris?                August court record, John is again surveyor on the Dry Ridge road from Lewis Buskirk’s to James Theobald’s.                September court record, David Norton is assigned to work on the new road to Bourbon road.                November court record, John posts bond of $1400 as administrator of John Doty’s estate sale.  Also a mill is authorized along with a dam on the Big Eagle Creek. for John Norton.                How did David Norton acquire 3000 acres? There is no deed transfer so he probably had the land on a bond.  He holds onto this land for 4 years.  I suggest that John Norton of Bourbon signed a bond for this land.  However, when John died in 1814 the land owner took the land back from David.
1811 - John 200 acres, 2 slaves      (David 3000 acres)                January court, John Norton is appointed on a commission to settle the estate of Anthony Kindle who is deceased.                March court, John is the clerk of the estate sale for Moses Doty. David Norton appears before the court.  “At the motion of David Norton, who represented to this court, that he had through a mistake, given to the commissioners of the taxable property, more land than he was entitled to pay taxes for.  Therefore it is ordered he be exempt from paying for more land than he has a title for which he represents I to be 3000 acres.”August court, John loses an appeal from David Cooper and pays $15 plus expenses.  This suit is related to the estate of John Doty.September 11, 1811 Mary Norton (daughter of John Norton) marries Lawrence Buskirk.November court, John is paid $2 for his two days as clerk of the election.  The other clerk is Michael Glaves.
1812 - John 200 acres, 2 slaves.       (David 2282 acres)No court records for John or David. David Norton sells off 178 acres. August 16, Henry Norton marries Betsy Ann Wright.August 29, David Norton Jr., Henry Norton sons of David Norton, and William Norton, son of John Norton, sign on in the Kentucky Mounted Volunteer Militia commanded by Col. William Mountjoy.  David is 16, Henry 22, William 20.November 5, Muster out of the Mounted Volunteers.  They traveled all the way to Canada and back.
1813 - 200 acres, 2 slaves   (David 2404 acres)  (Henry Norton on tax rolls)                August court, David is assigned a hand on the new road to bourbon Road. David sells another 418 acres.                October  John Norton marries for a 3rd time. Nancy Hemmingway.
1814 1814 – 200, no slaves   (David off tax rolls)  (Henry, 1 horse) (William on tax roll)                There are no court records for John or David in 1814. What happened to David Norton?  There is no record of an estate sale, which indicates he didn’t die.  His son John N. Norton has 230 acres of land the next year and a daughter, Sally, will be married in 1817 in Pendleton.  At least some of the family stays in the area. Henry and Hiram.
1815 - 200 acres, 6 horses  (John 230 acres, 3 horses) (Henry 2 horses)                John Norton is enrolled in Capt. Myers 21st Regiment of County Militia.  The second John Norton listed on the tax rolls is probably John N. Norton about 23 years old, son of David Norton.
1816 - 200 acres, (Henry 60 acres) (William 100 acres) (George 50 acres)
1817 - 200 acres,
1818 - 150 acres,

FAMILY NOTES

HUSBAND NOTES: John NORTON
General(1,2): HUSBAND NOTES: John NORTON
These notes are from the records of Ben Benson and edited by Scott Norton

Birth
==============================================
Birth data is taken primarilly from Revolutionary War pension statements of 1836
and 1841.
His statement of 1836 has him born in 1762. The 1841 statemtent also gives his
birth as 1762.

Revolutionary War Record
=============================================================
John Norton served as a private in the Loudon County Militia, Virginia from
1780-1781. He assisted in establishing American independence.
From notes from Uncle George on his lineage, Oct. 2, 1972

On Sept. 14, 1836, John made his first declaration for U.S. Revolutionary
War pension in Scott Circuit Court, stating that he was then 74 years of age.
[This was sworn to by J.T. Johnson, a teacher of the Christian religion and R.M.

Johnson, both members of Congress.]

On Dec. 13, 1841, John made his second declaration for a Revolutionary War
pension in Grant County Court, stating that he was then 79 years of age. [This
was an extensive description of his service, giving places, names, dates, and
what was done.]
[Note: John signed both of his petitions for his pension, showing that he
was literate.]

John appeared on 13 Dec 1841 before the court to document his Revolutionary War
service. The court heard testimony of Joshua Jones, a clergyman of Grant Co.
and from Andrew Martin, a resident of the county. Grant Co. Order Book B, p.
328.

Honorable W. O. Butler made inquires to the Pension Office, concerning
status of John's pension claim, in 1841 and again in 1843.
[Apparantly, both claims were rejected, first on on 30 Sep 1836 because
'did not serve six months'; and the second one, was suspended, refering to the
letter of Honorable W. Butler, not 6 mos. service. A further notation was found
showing a 'rejected' stamp, dated 1852, stating that he was listed in a printed
file of Rejected and Suspended Claims, cause: 'not 6 months service'.]

Census
===============================================
1800 Census, John Norton in Pendleton.

1810 census: John is listed in Pendleton Co., KY. He is listed as 45 or older
as is his wife. They have one son under 10 (probably James ?), one son 10 but
under 16 (Archibald), and two sons 16 but under 26 (Henry and George). They
have one daughter 10 but under 16 (Nancy). One slave is listed.
By 1810, John was over 46 as was his first wife, he had a son under 10
James (b. Kentucky 1799 or 1800), a son between 10 and 15 Archibald (b. Kentucky

12/15/1797), two sons between 16 and 25, George (b. Kentucky 1793) and Henry (b.

1790), a daughter 10 to 15 and one slave.

1820 census: John is listed in Grant Co., KY with his wife, both of which are
45 or older. They have one son 16 but under 26 (James) and one daughter 10 but
under 16 (Elizabeth) living with them. One person is engaged in agriculture.
By 1820, John was over 45 as was his second wife (1820 U.S. Census), only
one son, between 18 and 26, still lived in his household, Archibald (b. 1797) or

James (b. 1799 or 1800). George (b. 1793) and Henry (b. 1790) were both between
26 and 45, had married and established their separate households.

1830 census: John is listed as living alone, in Grant Co., Ky. He is listed as
60-70 years old.
By October 1830, John was between 60 and 70 and was living alone. Archibald
(b. 1797), Henry (b. 1790), and George (b. 1793) were maintaining their separate

households and were all between 30 and 40. Archibald had a white male (other
than himself) living in his household, also between 30 and 40, probably his
brother James (b. 1799).

By 1840, George, James, and Archibald all were between 40 and 50 and living
on their own farms. Archibald's household included a white male between 70 and
80 (John, b. 1762) .

John did not appear in the 1850 census, indicating his death between 1843
and 1850. Comparison of his stated age at various times indicates his birth
between January and September 1762.
(These notes are supported by extensive footnotes and copies of handwritten
documents attached to Gayle's application. These are in my file).

WIFE NOTES: Ann RUDDELL
General(1,2): Very little is known about this individual. It is assumed that she died in
Pendleton Co., KY. Her death date is assumed to before John's marriage to
Elizabeth Glaves in late 1801. (This marriage is not 100% sure, but fits with
some other data. See John's notes.)

I think that John Jr.'s first wife was Ann Riddle (Ruddell). They were married
in Shenandoah Co., VA on 15 Aug 1789. This date fits for John's known children.
The Ruddell family figures prominantly in both early Pendleton and Grant Co.
history. The spelling Riddle and Ruddell are close and I suspect that they were
interchanged by record keepers. Another piece of evidence to suggest that Ann is
John's first wife is that John's son, Archibald, gave the Ruddell name to one of
his sons, Charles Ruddell Norton. This suggests that the Ruddell family was
close to Archibald, namely his mother's maiden name. Shenandoah, Faquier, and
Loudoun Co. are close to each other, making the relationship of courting and
marriage of John Jr. to Ann.

From the History of Lewis, Clar, Knox and Scotland Co. MO
Biographical Appendix p 1154

George Buskirk, county treasurer, was born in Grant County, KY., September 20,
1812. He is the son of Lawrence and Mary A. (Norton) Buskirk. Ther grandfather
was a Pennsylvanian who went at an early date to Nicholas County, KY. in one of
which states the father was born. The name was originally Van Buskirk, but the
prefix has been dropped. The mother was a Kentuckian. They came to the
NorthWest about 1838, and after three years in Adams County, Ill., they came to
near Winchester this state and bought a farm. The father died in April, 1872 at

"George Buskirk, County Treasurer, was born in Grant County, KY, Sept. 26, 1812.

He is the son of Lawrence and Mary A. (Norton) Buskirk. His grand father was a
Pennsylvanian, who went at an early date to Nicholas County, Ky. in one of which

states the father was born. The name was originally Van Buskirk, but the prefix

has been dropped. The mother was a Kentuckian. They came to the Northwest
about 1838, and after three years in Adam County, ILL, they came to near
Winchester, this state, and bought a farm. The father died in April, 1872, at
the age of eighty-one years, and the mother followed him the next September, at
about the age of eighty-two. Their children were George; Martha A., the wife of

T. S. Myers; Eliza, the deceased wife of Judge Collins; William; Amanda
(deceased wife of J. Morris, also deceased); and Armilda, the wife of J. Crook.

Our subject was reared on a farm and had the meager advantages of the old log

bought a claim when the land was not surveyed; the next year, sold his claim and

settled three and a half miles east of Memphis, near Fort Donelson and Edinburg,

where he has a fine estate of over 198 acres. George was an "Old Hickory"
Democrat, and never wavered from those principles. He served in various local
offices, and in November 1886, was elected to his present position by his party,

and is serving in an efficient manner. He was married, on October 28, 1834, to
Clark, of his native county, who died in August, 1876. They had a family of ten
children, and those living are Lucinda, the wife of W. H. Walker; Mary J., the
wife of A. B. Baker; Susanna, the wife of J. Gilbert; Elizabeth, the wife of L.
S. Farmer, and William H.

The 1850 Census indicated that the value of his real estate was $800.00. It
also indicated that all of the children, who were old enough, were in school but

Lucinda, who was 14 at the time and could not read or write.

CHILD NOTES: Archibald NORTON
General(1,2): I have a deed for property bought by Archibald on August 18, 1829 from one John
Fowler, the land is described and is in Grant Co., Ky. It was recorded in the
county clerk's office on August 19, 1829.

Transfer of land from Lewis Myers of Grant Co. to Archibald Norton, 124.75 acres
adjacent to land already owned by the Norton family for the sum of $174.75.
Deed book D, p. 187. Dated 6 Oct 1836.

Copy of Title Bond of land transfer from Joseph Morin of Harrison Co., KY (an
heir to James Morin) to Archibald Norton abt. 80 acres of land, lying east of
the Robert Sanders survey and being the NE part of the James Morin survey.
Joseph is selling only his share of the James Morin survey. Attest: Charles
Ruddell. Dated 4 Jun 1823.

On 28 May 1824, the same Joseph Morin of Harrison Co. states that part of the
previous transfer of land was not rightfully owned by his father, James Morin,
and that Saunders' claim to the land took most of the above land. However, some
was left and Joseph Morin conveys that portion that Saunders did not claim to
Archibald Norton. Attest: James Norton.

I have another document from Oct 1823 which conveys some property from John
Fowler to father John Norton and then to Archibald, also in Oct 1823.

Archibald's will was witnessed by Charles Ruddell and George Perry Ruddell. It
was written on March 15, 1848, two dayes before his death. I have a copy of it
in my papers. He leaves his wife the place where he has lived for the last two
years and all of his personal belongings. There is apparantly a law suit over
the title to the land and he tells how the legal fees are to be paid and when
the land is to be further split up (after 2 years). It appointed his wife and
his brother, George Norton, as Executrix and Executor, of his estate. It was
produced at the April 1848 court term and recorded in the records 3 July 1848.
Will probate book C 1845-55, p. 100. Commissioners' reports of divisions of
land filed Feb 1854, and recorded 16 Aug 1855 in Book C, p. 587 (from General
Index to Wills and Commissioners Reports, Grant Co., KY, copy in my files).
(Copies of the original will and the division of the land along with a survey
from the original court records is in my files.)

1840 census: Archibald is living in Grant Co. with his family. He is listed as
40-50 years old and his wife as 30-40 years old. Their children are as follows:
one male, 0-5 years; 2 males, 5-10 years; 2 males 10-15 years; one female, 0-5
years; and one female, 5-10 years. There is also a male in the household who is
70-80 years old. This is John, b. 1762, Archibald's father. The census lists 5
in the family involved in agriculture. This would suggest that probably that
the two older sons, his father, and Archibald's wife helped him with the farm.
The two older sons were probably George Hanon, b. 1825, and William Jackson, b.
1828. All the rest of the chidren known to be born before 1840 are listed in
the age brackets in the census. No slaves are listed.

1830 census: Archibald is listed as A. Norton. He resides in Grant Co., Ky. He
is listed as 30-40 yrs. old. There is another male of the same age range living
in the household. This may be his brother, James, born 1799/1800. Archibald's
wife is listed, being 20-30 yrs. old. There are three males, ages 0-5 in the
household, George Hanon, and William Jackson. The third may have been John
James born in Mar. 1830. No other persons are listed in the household. His
home is located near his father John's home.

In an article about his son, Samuel D., in the History of Lewis, Clark, Knox,
and Scotland Counties of Missouri, 1887, the following items were mentioned.
Archibald was a native of Grant Co., Ky., born in 1797, and died in the same
county about 1847. He was a farmer, and as he started in life with very little
means, he was obliged to work at the weaver's trade at night, in order to get a
start. (I have several pieces of fabric that he wove, given to me by my cousin
Carolyn. They are mounted in frames.) It also states that John, his father,
was an early pioneer in Grant Co., and that the Nortons came originally from
Virginia.

From notes of Carl T. Norton to the Barton Collection in Pendleton Co., KY: His
home and farm was one and a half miles east of Dry Ridge or Sherman on the
Lemmon and Northcutt Rd.

In an pamphlet on Grant Co. Marriages, 1820-1850, from Selby Publishing, #476:
marriage date is given as 27 June 1823. It gives wife's name as Nancy Mitts.
Additional info on the marriage (from Grant Co. records) state that the marriage
was performed by C. Tomlin in Grant Co., KY. It likewise gives Nancy's name as
Mi tts.

listed in this census: B.H. and Robert, both of whom I have no other information
including birth dates. Thus I assume that they may have died young and were not
included in this census. Current info suggests that these two individuals are
not related to this family. 8/96) All the rest of the chidren known to be born
