slim bit of evidence that gave us the idea that Henry was Giles
father.)
- Henry Norton
was taxed in 1782 Montgomery, VA along with William Norton,
Thomas Branson and Jarret Branson.
- Henry may
have been a son of William Norton.
- William
Norton was the step-son of Thomas Branson who married Elizabeth
(Norton) Brown after his wife, Rebecca Borden, died.
- Some of
the Nortons were also Quakers.

about Cass, MI and in a biography it states that he was born 1806 in
Grayson, VA, so he could be a brother of Giles.
In the 1840 census
of Cass, MI in Calvin Twp, James East was listed 3 lines below Levi
Norton. On the same page were Giles Norton, and Joel East.
James and Joel were sons of William East.
Robert Painter who
was in 1840 Cass, MI was the son of Jacob Painter of Frederick, VA and
Mary Hunt. Jacob was the son of John Painter Jr. who was the brother
of Jane Painter, wife of Thomas L. Branson (son of John Day Branson).
In 1840 Cass, MI
Robert Painter was listed on the same page with Nathan Norton and
Pleasant Norton in Jefferson Twp.
So, in-laws of Jared
Branson Jr. were in Cass, Michigan living near relatives (by marriage)
of Thomas L. Branson Jr. and Thomas, son of John Day Branson, and near
relatives of Jane Painter. All of them were probably Quakers and may

Scott - I descend from Giles Norton, b. 20 Feb 1794 in SC. As you may
have found, some Norton's are more elusive than others! We believe that
Giles Norton is the son of Henry Norton and grandson of William Norton,
Pendleton District, SC. Based on what I found this week in Salt Lake
FHL, I have serious doubts that the William Norton of Pendleton County,
SC is related to Mercer Norton. The Mercer Norton book was published
in 1983 (I believe) and I suspect is out of print, It is about 2 inches
thick and you would probably find it in most genealogy libraries. I
copied the first 30 pages or so last year and will have access to that
when I return to Palm Spings, CA on 12 August. Would be more than happy
to share material with a William Norton descendant. Which son or daughter
of William/Jemima does your wife come from?

Hi Barry, Just spent a week at FHL in SLC chasing Norton's from Pendleton
Co, SC and heretofore have believed that William/Jemima were from the
Edward Norton Quaker line. Found info here that makes me question that
as factual. The Mercer Norton book tells us that "there is some
speculation as to whether or not William (Norton) is the same man as
the William Norton (wife Jemima) who moved to Pendleton District, South
Carolina." It goes on to say that William, Mercer and Edward (III)
were all on the tax lists for Randolph Co., NC in 1779.
I had previously
found William & Jemima Norton of Pendleton District, SC selling
his land in Grayson County, VA (previously Montgomery Co, VA) on Nov
23, 1793 and witnesses to the same are Edward Norton, Gideon Norton,
and Jesse Harrison. Jemima is unable to travel so there is a commission
to make a privy exam of Jemima and her agreement to the sale. John Willison
and William Edmondson, Justices for Pendleton Co., SC attest to her
agreement.
Also of interest
is that William, Henry and Edward Norton all appear on the roster of
Militia of Montgomery Co., Va 1777-1790 and tax lists of 1787. Hard
to be in two places at one time! Any thoughts? Two of us have had DNA
tests and it looks like someone from (Arkansas) Sampson Norton line
may also take the test.
